Do YOU suffer from insomnia? You may be lacking in MAGNESIUM


Consuming too much caffeine after 3pm, not enough exercise or an overload of stress hormones are most often the culprits of insomnia. But an array of recent trials have pointed the blame at a magnesium deficiency for thousands of people who toss and turn at night.

Studies have shown magnesium supplements can increases sleep time, efficiency and natural melatonin levels - a hormone critical for the regulation of normal sleep. 

Now, new research has found magnesium applied directly to the skin can deliver the mineral to the body quicker and more efficiently than ingested supplements - and help improve sleep quality in 92 per cent of deficient people. 

What is insomnia? 

Insomnia is a huge global problem, affecting around a third of men and women in their 30s and 40s and nearly half of women over 65.

There are two types, Type 1 insomnia where you can't get to sleep and Type 2, where you can get to sleep okay, but tend to wake at least once during the night.

And if you have either type, the chances are you have heard a million and one remedies: get black out blinds, eat some peanut butter before bed, get a sleep mantra, take a Valium. Actually don't. The latter is addictive and the formers, well, they're hit and miss at best.  

Magnesium: The facts 

Indeed, waking in the small hours is often associated with stress, anxiety or depression and these are conditions that can be exacerbated by magnesium deficiency, said nutrition expert Greg Weatherhead. But there are many more.

'Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body and all our cells rely on adequate levels being maintained,' said Mr Weatherhead. 

'It's responsible for over 300 biochemical functions in the body and sufficient amounts allow us to be more flexible, develop stronger bones, produce energy more efficiently and be better able to resist disease.'

While magnesium is predominantly found in nuts, wholegrain seeds and green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, decreasing levels in our Western diets have long been reported and amounts in our most common foods have declined by about 20 per cent since the 1950s, Mr Weatherhead added.

In fact, the most recent government funded UK Diet and Nutrition Report updated in March this year, showed more and more of us have below optimal intakes of magnesium, with teenage girls and the over 60's being at particular risk of deficiency.

Moreover, diets that include an excess of processed foods and bad fats such as those found in takeaways, donuts and commercial vegetable oils as well as refined sugars can all decrease our magnesium levels.

How does magnesium help sleep?

So, how can supplementing with a drug free mineral help people sleep, when so many other sleep remedies rarely make the cut?

'Magnesium is critical to many physiological and psychological processes that are essential for staying asleep,' Mr Weatherhead said. These include calming the mind and also helping muscles relax.

Along with helping to reduce levels of cortisol and adrenaline that could be waking us during sleep or causing erratic slumber, magnesium also works on a lesser known hormone essential to sleep.

'It helps improve sleep quality through its interaction with a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid),' Mr Weatherhead said.

'GABA is an amino acid responsible for reducing anxiety, promoting relaxation and preparing our bodies for sleep.'

Magnesium sensitises GABA receptors in the brain, increasing the positive effect of this molecule.

Why is magnesium on the skin better for insomnia than tablets?

'Unfortunately, our intake of magnesium has declined dramatically due to intensified farming methods, food processing and negative interactions with an increasing number of prescribable mediations,' said Mr Weatherhead.

'Magnesium is a mineral we evolved to have little and often and our digestive systems are not well equipped to absorb large single doses of magnesium such as those found in tablets and capsules.

'Either, much of the dose is simply not broken down and absorbed or it is lost through a loosening of the bowels, a common effect seen with a high intake of ingested magnesium tablets.'

There are a number of clinical studies published showing that magnesium delivered via the skin is an effective alternative to traditional tablet supplementation, said Mr Weatherhead.

In 2017, a study published in PLOS One, found that magnesium absorbed through skin significantly boosted magnesium levels in the blood.

A pilot study published in 2010 showed that BetterYou Magnesium could elevate cellular magnesium levels faster than traditional tablets or capsules.

Topical magnesium specialists BetterYou have worked with the Cardiff University academics on absorption testing for magnesium.

They are now in the final stages of the world's first clinical study with St Mark's Hospital London, investigating how magnesium applied to the skin can replace intravenous drips and subcutaneous injections for patients with severe bowel and digestive disorders.

America has hit a 'dreamlessness epidemic', and it is affecting our mental and physical health


Research shows links between dreaming less and worse mental and physical health.

Throughout the night, we pass through four stages of sleep several times. We do the majority of our dreaming during the fourth stage, called the 'rapid-eye movement' (REM) phase.

Research has found that about one in three American adults don’t get enough sleep in general and missing out on dreaming that occurs during REM-sleep can have particularly dire consequences for both our mental and physical health.

A study from the University of Arizona highlighted the wide array of REM-related problems that are forgotten as dreaming-sleep slips through the cracks between sleep science and psychology.

Science has come a long way since Sigmund Freud wrote The Interpretation Of Dreams, in 1899, but we still don’t have a clear answer to the question of why we dream.

The stage of sleep during which we have the most active dream lives, the REM cycle, was once thought to be the most deeply restful phase of sleep.

Now, much contemporary research says that the stage before REM sleep, called deep non-REM sleep is the most restful. But Dr Rubin Naiman, a psychologist specializing in sleep and dreams at the University of Arizona, says that we need both.

He compares much of sleep and dreaming to bodily nourishment. He says that prioritizing deep non-REM sleep over dreaming REM-sleep is like ‘saying which is more important, food or water?’

‘We can actually go without food for weeks and weeks, but without water for only a few days. The brain prioritizes deep sleep over REM sleep, and if someone is sleep deprived they will dive into deep sleep to catch up,’ Dr Naiman says.

‘But in order to be healthy, you need to have both,’ he adds.

Loss of not just sleep, but the REM sleep during which we dream, has been associated with greater risks of inflammation, pain sensitivity, obesity and memory problems, including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The link between REM sleep and Alzheimer’s is quite clear. Studies have shown that those that don’t enter the dreaming phase of sleep as quickly are more likely than others to develop Alzheimer’s.

When sleep is disrupted, a chemical called soluble beta amyloid tends to build up, interfering with cognition and kill brain cells. The presence of the chemical in the brain is one of the earliest warning signs for the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Dr Naiman laments the fact that many of his colleagues dismiss dreams as meaningless, and cites evidence that memory consolidation happens during REM sleep, and that dreams may be a part of this process.

Studies have shown an increase in REM sleep activity in the brain for those who are learning a new language, suggesting the sleep phase’s involvement in declarative memory formation.

‘We have known for years that there is a strong correlation between memory loss and damaged dreaming,’ says Dr Naiman, ‘when we don’t dream well, we don’t remember well.’

REM sleep affects different parts of our anatomy than other stages of sleep do.

‘The brain and viscera are more relaxed in deep sleep,’ says Dr Naiman, ‘but voluntary muscles are actually more relaxed in deep sleep,’ says Dr Naiman.

He also cites a long line of research documenting links between dreamless sleep and depression.

During REM sleep, the brain’s paralimbic system, which is responsible for emotional information processing (among other things) becomes much more active, while suppressing the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is involved in executive functions.

This pattern appears to occur only during REM sleep, when research has shown that the brain is engaged in the process of consolidating negative emotional memories.

‘Dreaming down regulates negative emotion,’ says Dr Naiman. ‘There’s a strong correlation between certain kinds of damaged dreams and depression.’

He says that sleep is comparable to emotional nourishment too.

If, as recent research suggests, ‘the gut acts as a second brain, then the brain is a second gut in dreaming,’ he says.

‘The brain chews, swallows, sifts through, digests and mediates what [experiences] we keep,’ Dr Naiman says.

‘If we don’t dream well, we are no longer digesting experience…it’s like psychological indigestion or constipation, which, for me, is a synonym for clinical depression,’ he says.

Counterintuitively, perhaps, drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, or taking sleeping pills all disrupt sleep, and particularly dreams.

Dr Naiman says that while a glass of wine with dinner is probably okay, a night cap (or two, or three) after dinner probably aren’t.

He says that this is because ‘the body and brain are always seeking equilibrium.’

Alcohol acts as a depressant, slowing down the brain and the nervous system, like the brakes in a car.

‘When the brain is braking, the body tries to balance things out by releasing adrenaline,’ like pressing the gas pedal, Dr Naiman says.

But once alcohol is processed by the digestive system, ‘that foot comes off the brake pretty quickly, but the other foot stays on the gas.’

This leads to a surge of adrenaline that can pull us out of any sleep, including REM sleep, and disrupt the whole resting process.

He says that data suggests that marijuana may help people fall asleep, but then lead to a similar disruptive rush. Sleeping pills similarly can help to put you to sleep, but, like antidepressants and allergy medications contain compounds that interfere with acetylcholine, which mediates REM sleep.

Dr Naiman says that he and his lab have used ‘effective combinations of exercise, morning light and nutrients with vitamin D’ to help people eliminate alcohol, drugs and even alarm clocks – which he says can shake us from important dreams too early – form their lives, and promote healthy, dreamy sleep.

13 scientifically-proven tips to improve your sleep


Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood or banishing under-eye circles. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. 

Here are 13 scientifically-proven tips to improve your sleep.

1. Get your napping right

If napping makes you more tired, you're not doing it right, says Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, a physiologist specializing in sleep and author of Fast Asleep, Wide Awake: Discover the secrets of restorative sleep and vibrant energy.

'The key is to take controlled naps which can revive you,' she explains. 

'For example, a power nap of five to 20 minutes unloads the brain and could make up for a small sleep debt from the night before, making you feel more recharged'.

Here's what happens: during sleep, your brain produces different kinds of waves which correspond to how deeply you sleep. After 20 minutes, the brain may move into its deeper slow-wave sleep, leaving you groggy when you wake up. 

'If you're only napping for 20 minutes and still feeling tired and unrefreshed afterwards, you may be chronically exhausted,' says Ramlakhan. 

'If you stick with it, napping only for five-20 minutes you could eventually begin to feel better. The key is not to be tempted to sleep for longer or you will disturb your sleep in the evening.'

Set an alarm so you don't oversleep, suggests Ramlakhan. 

'Don't get too comfortable or you won't wake up – an armchair or sofa is great – and take with you some lavender or a cushion you associate with sleep to help trigger your brain to relax.' 

Try and not nap after 3pm though as this is when your body's levels of the sleep hormone melatonin begin to rise. This signals to the brain that it's time to wind down and prepare for evening and napping after this time could interrupt your night's sleep. 

If you feel tired during the day but too 'wired' to nap, Ramlakhan recommends yoga nidra, a guided yogic sleep done for about 25 minutes. 

'Even if you don't actually fall asleep it deeply relaxes the body so you come out of it feeling relaxed but recharged.' There are many different versions that do a similiar thing, download one from iTunes or follow one on You Tube. 

2. Go to bed and wake up at the same time 

A staggering 40 percent of us don't get the recommended six to nine hours sleep a night, research by The Sleep Council has found. 

The long weekend lie-in is a tempting antidote but while it may reduce sleepiness and stress, it won't help your ability to concentrate, research published in The American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology found. 

In fact, sleep deprived subjects in the study showed impaired concentration even after their 'recovery sleep' at the weekend.

'Lie ins and long naps at the weekend disrupt our body clocks which could disrupt our sleep in the long term by making it harder to sleep at night during the week,' says Professor Colin Espie, a sleep specialist at the University of Oxford. 

'The brain's need for sleep is due to 'sleep pressure' which accumulates during the day and becomes greater the longer we're awake,' he explains. 'Sleeping in for long periods confuses this process.'

If you miss some sleep one night, you can catch up the next night with little problem, says Dr Neil Stanley, a medic and independent sleep expert. 

'But after about two nights of not sleeping enough, you're in sleep debt and lie ins at the weekend can't make up for that'. 

If you make no other change to your sleep, he suggests waking up at the same time every day, even at the weekend. 'This trains your body to use the time it has to sleep most efficiently.'

3. Tackle the temperature 

Temperature is an aspect of sleep that often gets overlooked,' says James Wilson, a leading sleep expert. 

'But after light, it has the greatest impact on our circadian rhythms (our bodies' wake/sleep cycles), and our bodies are very sensitive to it; it only takes a change in core body temperature of 0.5 degrees Celsius for our bodies to start waking up. On a physiological level sleep is simple. 

'To produce melatonin (the sleep hormone) we need a drop in heart rate and a drop in core temperature. If both of these things happen than our body will produce melatonin most efficiently.'

So, what room temperature is optimal for sleeping then? 

'When it comes to room temperature we should be looking for somewhere between 16-20 degrees Celsius (60.8- 68 degrees fahrenheit), as it is that melatonin production is more efficient between 16-20 degrees,' says Wilson. 

'It is preferable for the bedroom to be cooler than the rest of the house to encourage a drop in core temperature'.

If you find it hard to wind down, having a bath or shower can trick the body. Getting really warm then really cold quickly triggers the melatonin production, Wilson asserts. Doing this half an hour before bed gives the best effect.

When it comes to duvets, tog rating is a measurement of heat retention. 'If you have a synthetic or feather/down duvet they are designed to trap moisture in and it is this moisture heating up which makes your environment warm', Wilson explains. 

'If you use materials like Alpaca fleece (this is my top choice) bamboo, wool or silk your body is allowed to breathe and the moisture disappears, which can make you less likely to be hot. 

'In addition to this you can add bamboo bedding rather than cotton or or synthetics as it is more breathable and adds to the impact of the duvet. 

4. Take magnesium tablets 

This mineral is often called nature's tranquilizer because of its calming properties and because it can help the body relax and unwind at the end of the day. 

You can eat it in foods such as kale, spinach, broccoli, nuts and seeds and pulses which are great before bed. 

'Magnesium is necessary for normal energy metabolism,' says nutritionist Robert Hobson. 

But food surveys show that about one in ten women are not getting adequate amounts of magnesium from their diet – it's found green leafy vegetables, wholegrain cereals, eggs and nuts.

'One of the early indicators of low magnesium levels is tiredness and fatigue so increasing you magnesium intake may be useful,' he says. 

If you're tired, try supplementing with magnesium. Taken before bed it can have a relaxing effect on the mind and muscles and help promote sleep, he says. Try taking one Healthspan Magnesium and B Complex an hour before bed.


5. Use magnesium on your skin 

Studies have shown that magnesium taken transdermally, – through skin – can have an even more instant and calming effect on sleep than tablets. 

You can bathe in magnesium, use a foot soak, enriched body oil and/or moisturiser, allowing it to be absorbed transdermally through the skin.

Is there science behind it? Research from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge has shown that there is a relationship between our cells' magnesium levels and the body's ability to follow its sleep cycle efficiently. 

'Basically, having the right levels of magnesium in the body means we find it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the right time,' says Wilson.

'Magnesium helps the body relax by ensuring the GABA receptors in our brain and nervous system are working as efficiently as possible,' explains Wilson. 

'GABA receptors help the brain switch off and without it, our minds would continue to race. It's also essential for allowing your muscles to relax, particularly after stress or exercise.'

Using magnesium transdermally – on the skin – instead of taken it internally as supplements offers better absorption to tablets and capsules, says Wilson. 

Applied directly to the skin; magnesium will be absorbed directly into the skin tissue, entering cells immediately replacing magnesium lost through the stresses of modern life, he explains.

6. Try the Indian herbal fix 

Ashwagandha is one of the most widely prescribed herbal Ayurvedic medicines in India recommended to address sleep problems, stress and anxiety. The anti-stress benefits of ashwagandha have been widely researched in a number of published studies.

For example, one study that was carried out on 64 adults who were suffering chronic stress were given capsules of ashwagandha for 60 days, and the other half took a placebo. 

Neither the participants nor the researchers knew which they were taking until after the trial.

After 60 days, those who took the ashwagandha had much lower scores for perceived stress, insomnia, anxiety and depression than the placebo group. 

What's more, their average cortisol level (a stress hormone that is often too high in people who suffer with insomnia) fell by 28 percent per cent but dropped by only eight per cent in the placebo group – a good indication that this remedy can benefit those who struggle to sleep well at night. 


7. Exercise. Period. 

Lots of people think exercising in the evening might keep them awake. In fact, research shows that even vigorous exercise before bedtime doesn't cause problems sleeping for many people and in some cases, it might even be beneficial. 

Indeed, people who exercised for at least 30 minutes 5-6 times a week – regardless of what time of day they exercised – were also the least likely to take sleep medication, found The Sleep Council research. 

'Some studies suggest time spent in the deeper stages of sleep increases after exercise,' says Professor Espie. 

A 2011 study found adults with insomnia who ran on a treadmill three times a week either in the morning or at 6pm saw their insomnia improve including taking less time to fall asleep, waking up less and feeling better in the mornings.

'As long as you wind down, exercising in the evening shouldn't affect your sleep,' says Dr Ramlakhan. 

This could be anything that relaxes you such as a hot Epsom salts bath or a few downloading yoga moves. 

8. Know your sleep type 

Some people like Margaret Thatcher, Gandhi and Winston Churchill may have famously thrived on less sleep but they're a rarity. 

In fact, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco discovered a gene mutation in people that predisposed them to needing about 20 per cent less sleep than the rest of us. But they estimate those 'short-sleepers' only comprise around five per cent of the population. 

'Sleep is like height, it's genetically determined,' says Dr Stanley. So if your mum or dad were short sleepers you may be too. But while the amount of sleep you need can vary from three to nine hours, most people need 7-8.'

'The best gauge is how you feel during the day,' says Dr Ramlakhan. 

'The signs you're not getting enough sleep are cravings for sweets, caffeine and carbohydrates, wanting to go back to sleep as soon as you wake up and thinking about sleep during the day'. 

Conversely, she says if you wake up without an alarm clock at the same time everyday – whether it's for work, at the weekend or on holiday – with only 4-5 hours sleep you could be among the lucky few genuine 'short-sleepers'. Find your your sleep type here 

9. Stop worrying about waking up 

Most people have experienced the fear that they are going to wake up several times resulting in a disturbed nights sleep but in reality it is natural to wake up during the night.

'Sleep studies show that the average human being wakes approximately 10 times during the night. The theory is that this sleep-wake cycle evolved for our survival and safety: we come into a semiconscious state to check that all is well and we are safe and then slide back into sleep,' says Dr Ramlakhan.

It isn't abnormal for someone to wake up at 4 in the morning, asserts James Wilson. 

'This is when our body is at its coolest, it is often when our bladders want to empty and psychologically we worry that we only have a few hours until our proper wake up time and begin to worry.

'As someone who has had insomnia this was and sometimes still is my issue,' says Wilson. 'What I do is if I haven't got back to sleep I get up and try and use the sleep deprivation to get better quality sleep thenext night and I try not to worry about it!'


10. Turn your clock the other way 

Checking the time in the middle of the night can be very disruptive as it can often lead you to work out how many hours you've slept so far and how much sleep you have left before your alarm goes off. Then you start overthinking about tomorrow – it's a vicious cycle.

It's this kind of brain activity that could lead to you to lying awake for ages. This turns on your sympathetic nervous system (the part that deals with problem solving and focus) instead of your parasympathetic nervous system (the one you need on when you're sleeping as it promotes rest).

Turn your alarm clock to face the other way and don't be tempted to check it if you wake up, just lie there feeling cosy and you'll be most likely to fall back to sleep. If you don't try these relaxation tips from James Wilson:

The 'The' Technique

Close your eyes and imagine a bright light at the end of a long tunnel. Focus on the light and as you do breathe in and out slowly in a yogic style. 

Doming your stomach out as you breathe in and pulling your stomach back into your ribs as you breathe out While you do this repeat the word 'The' over and over again. This prevents thoughts popping into your head such as school issues, relationship problems or just worrying about what is happening tomorrow.

One Line from a Song

Take a line from a song, a song with positive memories and repeat it over and over again.

11. Give up on sleep. Seriously 

It seems we're resigned to insomnia, with a third of us getting by on 5-6 hours sleep a night, kept mostly awake by worry and stress. 

Yet one survey found that 38 per cent of us think the answer to insomnia is going to sleep earlier when in fact it could be just the opposite. You need to build up your 'sleep pressure' says Professor Espie, which is simply about being awake and active enough to make yourself tired. 

Experts recommend that people with insomnia go to sleep later, waiting until they are truly sleepy before getting into bed.

Go to sleep an hour later than you normally would to ensure you're more tired than usual and actively 'give up on sleep'. 

Worrying about getting back to sleep, how little you're sleeping or how ruined you will be tomorrow is paradoxically keeping your mind in the kind of stressed, survival mode in which sleep is the last thing it wants to do.

The less you care about sleep, the more likely it is to happen. 

This focusing less on sleep is part of a therapy called 'Paradoxical Intention Therapy' recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in which you forget your preoccupation with sleep and simply go to bed when you are tired, even if that means you only get four hours sleep (eventually your body should get tired earlier and earlier and adjust). 


12. Get some morning light 

'Morning light is the most effective at setting our body clocks,' says Russell Foster, professor of circadian neuroscience at the University of Oxford and author of The Rhythms Of Life: The Biological Clocks That Control the Daily Lives of Every Living Thing (Profile £6.99) explains.

Our body clocks are set to the external world as a result of the light/dark cycle because cells on the eye called photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, which form part of the optic nerve, pick up light signals and convey that light/dark information to the body's 'master' clock in the brain. 

This sends signals to every cell in the body's organ systems all of which have their own internal 24 hour clocks, to help regulate our systems. 

Most of that process is determined by our exposure to natural light, Prof. Foster explains. 

'If you want to be more focused maximise your exposure to natural morning light as it's also good for elevating alertness and lowering your predisposition towards depression.'

If you can't get outside, have your morning cup of coffee or tea next to a bright window.

13. Use proven herbal help (not benzodiazepines) 

Fact: Benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax only take two weeks' continuous use to develop a dependency so avoid them at all costs. 

But don't underestimate the power of high quality herbals. 

The most well researched are valerian, hops and passionflower in combination. One randomised double blind placebo controlled study found valerian and hops together had a far superior effect as a natural sedative to valerian alone. Meanwhile, the evidence for passionflower shows that it can help manage anxiety without morning drowsiness.

'I am a herbalist I recommend products that have a combination of botanicals as I believe that these work better than those formulas that rely on a single botanical,' says Rick Hay, herbalist and nutritionist. 

'Valerian, hops and passionflower are important herbs to use if your nervous system is under pressure and while evidence is mounting about their efficacy in scientific terms, their use traditionally for centuries show their effectiveness.'

Artichokes, leeks and onions could improve sleep and relieve stress by boosting levels of gut bacteria


Eat onions, leeks and artichokes if you're stressed and struggling to sleep. For scientists have discovered that the popular vegetables could help humans to relax - allowing them a better night's sleep.

They are known to be high in prebiotics, dietary fibers that act as food for good stomach bacteria.

And a groundbreaking new study has found these help to boost gut health by aiding the growth of beneficial bugs.  They also release metabolic byproducts which influence the brain into overcoming worry and fear, research shows. 

Experts believe the findings strengthen the ever-growing link between gut bacteria and overall health.

A lot is already known about probiotics - live bacteria designed to improve gut health - but research on prebiotics is relatively scarce. 

To test their effects, a team of US scientists fed three-week-old male rats a diet of either standard chow or chow that included prebiotics.

The rodents are often used in scientific research due to their close genetic and behavioural resemblance to humans. 

They then monitored the rodents' body temperature, levels of stomach bacteria and sleeping cycles using a brain activity testing. 

Those on the prebiotic diet spent more time in non-rapid-eye-movement sleep (NREM), the researchers from University of Colorado Boulder found.

This form is more restful and restorative is where the body gets the chance to repair itself.   

After being exposed to a stressor, the rats on the prebiotic diet also spent more time in rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM).

REM sleep is when dreams occur, and is believed to be critical for promoting recovery from stress.

Stress has previously been shown to reduce healthy diversity of gut bacteria and to lead to a temporary flattening of natural fluctuations in body temperature.

But rats on the prebiotic diet were buffered from these impacts, the scientists discovered.

They maintained a healthy and diverse gut microbiota and normal temperature fluctuations even after stress exposure. 


Writing in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, the researchers said: 'It is possible that a diet rich in prebiotics started in early life could help improve sleep, support the gut microbiota and promote optimal brain/psychological health.'

But the researchers said that it's far too early to recommend prebiotic supplements as a sleeping aid.

Further studies are needed to confirm the effects that prebiotics can have in promoting a good night's rest or buffering stress.

Taking an hour's nap after lunch can keep your brain five years younger, according to a new study.But researchers found that a longer or shorter nap did not produce the same results.

The study involved around 3,000 Chinese adults over the age of 65 - with 60 per cent reporting that they had a nap after lunch ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. 

Participants were given basic maths problems and memory tests to complete to assess their cognitive ability. 

The research, published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found that people who took an hour-long nap after lunch did better on the tests compared to the people who did not nap.

In fact, those who took shorter naps, longer naps or no naps at all showed decreases in their cognitive skills that were four to six times greater than those taking hour-long naps.  

Dr Junxin Li, who led the research, said: 'These people also experienced about the same decline in their mental abilities that a five-year increase in age would be expected to cause.

'Cognitive function was significantly associated with napping. Comparisons showed that moderate nappers had better overall cognition than non-nappers or extended nappers.

'Non-nappers also had significantly poorer cognition than short nappers.'

I have been using my Iluminage Copper Infused Sleep Mask for 2 months now, so here is my personal review:

Clean sleeping - the latest preachy trend


There's no doubt you've heard of the concept of clean eating - eating as many whole, or minimally processed, foods at possible. And now, in our desire to live in a 'clean' world, this method has crept into our sleeping habits in the form of 'clean sleeping'.

Gwyneth Paltrow, actress and founder of lifestyle publication goop, coined the phrase in an exclusive article for Daily Mail Online in December.   

But you will need to rest your head on a $60 copper pillow and don some $45 heated socks.

Quality sleep is insurmountably important; numerous studies lay bare how important it is for adults to get at least seven hours sleep to keep our immune system strong, our brains alert, and even fend off disease. 

A great deal of the body's repair work happens when we sleep. Our muscles repair, our glymphatic system washes away brain toxins, immune support.

This is because human growth hormone (HGH) is released by the brain into the bloodstream during sleep, and its release is part of the repair and restoration function of sleep.

There are five principles that make up clean sleeping:

  • Getting at least eight hours of sleep per night, ideally 10
  • Getting into bed by 10pm (the sleep between 10pm and 12am is some of the most restorative) 
  • Eating clean throughout the day and limiting caffeine intake to support the gut and adrenals 
  • Regular exercise – ideally first thing in the morning or at lunchtime – to reset your body's circadian rhythm 
  • Making your bedroom a sanctuary by separating it from work, and keep it as dark as possible 

Studies have shown that lacking sleep has the power to alter our hormones, triggering issues for both mind and body.

Sleep deprivation can disrupt the metabolism and lead to hormone imbalance, but it can also lead to a weakened immune system, mismanagement of stress and an increased risk of heart disease.

Dr Lefkowitz explained that tiredness is a stressor and stress stimulates the hormone cortisol and insulin, which triggers your body to store fat. Stress also reduces glucagon, the hormone that instructs your body to burn fat.  

The experts warned that another consequence of lack of sleep is that the hormone ghrelin, an appetite stimulant hormone, can go into overdrive and that getting less than eight hours of sleep every night can lead you to consume an extra 385 calories per day.

Dr Robert Oexman, of the Sleep Institute, said that people may criticize the idea of being told when and how to sleep.

He said:  'You may say to me, 'Hey Bob, I've slept just six hours today and I'm not dead' and here's I say to that.

'We can tell you what is good for you and your body and it's up to you to follow it. But if you don't, you're at a higher risk for certain diseases.

'Americans in particular today are on so many medications for some many things: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anxiety, depressing. Getting enough sleep can be a very effective thing to helping get rid of a lot of these things.'

The goop experts say that there are a few tips and tricks to getting yourself some quality shuteye.

1. Consistency 

The doctors recommend going to sleep and waking up around the same time as often as possible to get your body into a rhythm. Getting a consistent pattern is better than just making up for it on the weekends. 

2. Avoid foods and drinks

Make an effort to avoid caffeine and energy drinks later in the day, and resist the urge to have a midnight snacks because the digestive system can interrupt sleep.

3. Keep your room dark

Don't keeping your phone on your bedside table, the experts say. The light it emits during the night can interrupt the body's production of melatonin, meaning sleep is more likely to be interrupted.

Research has shown we need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. 

The experts say there might be many signs you're not getting enough sleep including feeling irritable, anxious, depressed, loss of mental clarity, or a tendency to gain weight.

Dr Oexman added: 'Beauty sleep is very much a real thing. Not only does it change your collagen levels but if you look at a before and after picture of someone who's had little sleep, you can see massive changes in their physical appearance.'

Lack of sleep WILL make you sick


Sleep deprivation cripples the immune system, a new study has revealed - explaining why so many of us get sick without good rest. 

Researchers at the UW Medicine Sleep Center examined 11 pairs of identical twins with different sleep patterns, taking blood samples from each. 

They found overwhelmingly that the twin who got less sleep had a more depressed immune system compared with their sibling.

It is one of the first studies to employ 'real world' conditions to confirm how lack of sleep hampers white blood cells, which are essential to keep up our immunity. 

'What we show is that the immune system functions best when it gets enough sleep. Seven or more hours of sleep is recommended for optimal health,' said lead author Dr. Nathaniel Watson.

The team elected to examine twins, since studies show genetics accounts for up to 55 percent of our sleep behaviors. 

They focused specifically on immune response, rather than the more commonly examined factors - such as inflammation. 

It builds on previous studies that show when sleep deprived people are given a vaccine, there is a lower antibody response.

Other reports have shown that sleep deprived people are far more likely than their rested peers to get the rhinovirus if they are exposed to it.

But, the researchers warn, data from the Centers for Disease Control show that Americans are now sleeping an estimated 1.5 to two hours less than they did a century ago.

About one-third of the working population sleeps less than six hours per night.
'Modern society, with its control of light, omnipresent technology and countless competing interests for time, along with the zeitgeist de-emphasizing sleep's importance, has resulted in the widespread deprioritization of sleep,' the authors wrote. 

Dr Watson added: 'This study provides further evidence of sleep to overall health and well-being particularly to immune health.'

Shower in the morning to boost creativity and at night if you want to fall asleep


Most of us have a preferred time to shower - first thing in the morning or last thing at night. But a study has revealed how the timing of your bathroom ritual could affect your state of mind.

It found that morning showers can induce creativity and are good for stressed workers while evening showers help those who find it difficult to switch off at night. 

Dr Shelley Carson, a psychology lecturer at Harvard University, said morning showers can help those who are feeling stressed due to work or under pressure to be creative. 

Showering helps you relax but also makes you alert, so washing in the morning can stimulate creativity.  

'Your cognitive processes relax, renew, and regenerate, and your ideas and solutions will effortlessly present themselves,' she said, according to the NZ Herald.

Night-time showers are helpful because they regulate body temperature which can help you fall asleep more easily. 

'That rapid cooling after you get out of the shower or out of the bath tends to be a natural sleep inducer,' said Christopher Winter, MD at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, according to the Herald.

'So it's a nice way to fool your body into thinking it's time to go to bed.'

However, mixing up your shower routine to include both morning and evening cleansing, depending on stress levels and work schedules, could be the solution to get the best of both. 

As well as the timing, the temperature of the shower also has an effect. 

Dr Derek V Chan, a New York-based cosmetic and medical dermatologist, advised patients shower once a day.

And while hot showers feel great, Dr Chan urged people to opt for warm showers as they're better for the skin. 
'Hot showers may feel good, but in general, warm showers are better than hot showers'

'Using very hot water can reduce moisture in the skin and strip away many of the skin's natural lubricants.'

Women's brain power is 'boosted by a good night's rest while men can get away with napping'


A good night’s sleep could help boost your brain power – but only if you are a woman. And a long afternoon nap has the same effect on men, scientists have discovered.

Researchers from Germany discovered a link between women’s sleep and intelligence, and also found similar patterns for men who take afternoon naps. They believe the differences between how sleep affects the sexes could be down to how men and women’s brains are structured, as well as how hormonal changes affect the body during the day.

Scientists from the Max Planck Institute in Munich analysed the sleep patterns of 160 adults with a broad range of IQs, of which 72 were women and 88 were men. 

Participants also underwent intelligence tests which measured reasoning and problem solving.

They monitored how sleep spindles – bursts of activity in the brain – appeared during the dreamless, non-rapid eye movement state of sleep.

Sleep spindles vary in length and intensity and can ‘light up’ different parts of the brain. They have previously been associated with intelligence.

The study, presented at the FENS Forum of Neuroscience in Copenhagen, found a link between slow sleep spindles and intelligence in women, but not men.

Professor Martin Dresler said the presence of sleep spindles could indicate the quality of white matter in the brain, which connects to grey matter – the information-processing parts of the brain.

He said that integrity of white matter was associated with higher IQ scores in women, but there was no such correlation in men. 

This suggested the structure of women’s brains meant sleep which boosted this white matter could benefit their intelligence.

Researchers also examined 86 men having afternoon naps of 100 minutes – but no women were studied.

Men having naps showed the same link between slow sleep spindles and intelligence that was evident for women overnight.

The scientists said this showed there was a ‘fundamental difference’ between daytime and night-time sleeps. 

They suggested the way hormones behaved differently during the day could cause the changes.

Professor Dresler said: ‘Our results demonstrate that the association between sleep spindles and intelligence is more complex than we have assumed until now.

‘There are many factors involved in intellectual abilities, and sleep is just one of them.

‘This large study of men and women give us a more accurate framework for the next phase of research which will involve differences in individuals’ sleep patterns.’

A single poor night’s sleep can age you


A new study shows cell damage and signs of accelerated aging after only one sleepless night.

Dozens of studies in recent years have left little doubt that chronic sleeplessness can make you old before your time. But new research suggests that even a single sleepless night can trigger accelerated aging in older adults.

Researchers from the UCLA Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology monitored 29 participants ranging in age from 61 to 86 over a four-night period. Each participant was subjected to partial sleep deprivation during one of the nights. Their blood samples subsequently showed higher levels of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), an indication that genes related to cell damage had been activated. Such cell damage has been linked to premature aging.

“Our data support the hypothesis that one night of not getting enough sleep in older adults activates important biological pathways that promote biological aging,” lead study author Judith Carroll, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral science, said in a statement released by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

No matter how old you are, a good night’s sleep affects everything from brain function to your immune system. And it’s key to maintaining your vitality into your golden years.
